Trio of Students Earn Scholarships from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers is, as one might gather from the name, the preeminent organization dedicated to its field.

Each year, it awards funds of varying amounts to students who might criteria highly specific to each scholarship.

For the 2021-22 academic year, three MABE students were selected for honors, two of whom each earned two selections.

“This is a tremendous recognition, and I am pleased that our students were selected for it,” said Department Head Kivanc Ekici. “It is a sign of not only the importance of their work and the high level at which they perform, but also a recognition of the strength of this department.”

Matthew Stuckey and Alicja Zeligowska each had two awards, both of them earning an Ansys Inc. Scholarship and an ASME Foundation Scholarship. Additionally, Mitchell Trotsky won the Berna Lou Cartwright Scholarship.

The Ansys Inc. Scholarship goes to full-time students who are active ASME members seeking a degree in mechanical engineering or mechanical engineering technology. Recipients must show a demonstrated need, possess leadership skills, and have a GPA of at least 2.5 out of 4. The scholarship is for $5,000.

For the ASME Foundation Scholarship, awardees are selected in reflection of potential contribution to mechanical engineering and by scholastic achievement. The award amount is variable, based off educational costs and economic needs. Students must be full-time, pursuing mechanical engineering degrees, with those with demonstrated economic needs given preference.

The Berna Lou Cartwright Scholarship is awarded to students who are US citizens in their final year of college as undergraduates. It was established to recognize and honor Cartwright for her work with the ASME Auxiliary, which aims to fund scholarships and promote mechanical engineering. It is worth $3,000.
